Sudirman Cup finals: Shi Yu Qui beat World Champion Kento Momota
FINLAND: China lived up to their billing as badminton stalwarts in a 3-1 win over Japan to retain the Sudriman Cup in Vantaa, Finland on Sunday. Shi Yu Qui Beat World Champion Kento Momota with Score 21-13, 8-21, 21-12 (October 3).
China has once again won the Sudirman Cup title. Men's singles player Shi Yu Qi and the doubles teams put on a stellar performance as China beat Japan 3-1 in the final. This is the 12th Sudirman Cup title for the Chinese team.
It's the third time Japan has finished runners-up in the mixed team world championships. It was their best challenge for the title yet, having previously lost 3-0 in 2019 and 2015.
The most curious turning point was the men's singles match after a high-quality opening game, which was won by relentless attacking Shi Yu Qi. The effort seems to have wiped him out, as he was a passenger in the second, saving his energy for the third.
However, in women's singles, 2020 Tokyo Olympic champion Chen Yufei of China went down to World No. 5 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 19-21, 16-21 in two straight games. Akane Yamaguchi drew 1-1 for Japan, the match lasted 49 minutes.
Game, Set, Mind Match for China
“At the last Sudirman Cup I was in the same circumstances and I lost, so I didn’t want a repeat. Also, she is the Olympic gold medallist so I determined to challenge her,” said Yamaguchi.
“I just wanted to play a steady game. I knew she had played some long matches and would be tired. I hadn’t played so many long matches, so I was quite fresh.”
The defending champions got their first chance to retain the crown in women's doubles through recently crowned Olympic silver medalists and 2017 world champions Jia Yi Fan and Chen Qing Chen.
